Digital health

Research on Digital Health combines Aalto University’s world-class research activities in ICT with the top expertise in medicine and other life sciences of the University of Helsinki and the Helsinki and Uusimaa Hospital District (HUS). By this combination, we are developing a globally leading research cluster. The Digital Health research subarea is mostly computer science-oriented; the hardware basis for digital information processing is covered separately.

The research in this subarea focuses on the following topics:

  • Computational Metabolomics (Juho Rousu)
  • Computational Methods in Personalized Medicine (Samuel Kaski, Harri Lähdesmäki, Juho Rousu, Aki Vehtari)
  • Computational Systems and Synthetic Biology (Harri Lähdesmäki, Juho Rousu, Samuel Kaski)
  • Data Analytics and Decision Support for Healthcare (Kimmo Kaski, Samuel Kaski, Juho Rousu, Aki Vehtari)
  • Sensor Informatics and Medical Technology (Simo Särkkä)
  • Speech Communication Technology (Paavo Alku)
  • Statistical Epidemiology (Aki Vehtari, Pauliina Ilmonen)

In addition, the following affiliated topics belong to the Digital Health subarea:

  • Activity Games (Perttu Hämäläinen)
  • Social Computing (Jari Saramäki, Aristides Gionis, Kimmo Kaski)

Major initiatives and projects related to the Digital Health subarea include:

  • Molecular Systems Immunology and Physiology Research (Symmys) (2011-2017) – a Center of Excellence funded by the Academy of Finland
  • Computational Inference Research (COIN) (2011-2017) – a Center of Excellence funded by the Academy of Finland
  • Living Factories (LiF) (2014-2016) – a Tekes new strategic openings project in synthetic biology
  • The Health Capital Cluster and Data-Driven Healthcare Initiative (2015-2016); a project funded by the Centennial Foundation of the Technology Industries of Finland
  • Data-Driven Decision Support for Digital Health (2016-2017); a project funded by the Academy of Finland
